What we call menopause is actually three separate stages in a person's life. Perimenopause or premenopause, menopause, and post-menopausal. I will discuss the details of each stage below.
Perimenopause or Premenopause
Perimenopause or Premenopause is the time leading up to the cessation of cycles (menstrual bleeding). Typically a person may start noticing changes or symptoms during this time. This stage can start in the late 30's or early 40's. Hormones start fluctuating and cycles become irregular. If you were not tracking your cycles already, it is a good time to start! There are lab tests to find out what your hormones are up to, but they are not very accurate. They depend on a lot of variables. So, track your cycles. The time of perimenopause can range from3 -10 years prior to reaching the threshold of menopause. Of course, this may vary by individual. We are all on our unique journey.
Menopause - The Threshold
Menopause is the threshold we pass over after 12 continuous months of no cycles. This can occur between 45-55 years. The average age in the US and UK is 51 years. Some people can go through menopause earlier. If you bleed prior to reaching 12 months, you start your counting over. If you bleed after crossing this threshold, please consult your physician. Also, until you reach the 12 month mark, you could still become pregnant. It's tricky to know where you are in your cycle since they are irregular and could start at anytime before the 12 month date. The best predictor of when you will cross through the threshold of menopause is the age at which your mother entered menopause ( as long as there was no hysterectomy!)
Post-Menopausal
Post menopause is after crossing the threshold of menopause. If you experienced symptoms, they will gradually lessen as your hormones level out. Taking care of ourselves with the appropriate diet, exercise, rest, and lifestyle habits help with our bones and heart health. Now is the time to bring forth what you want to leave in the world. Maybe it's helping others? Or, creating beautiful artwork? There are many ways to contribute to our world. The creative fires inside us are being utilized in different ways than our childbearing years. Be fearless and live your dreams!
